3 things that would make my Survival Craft more fun…

First off, let me sat that despite my last post on Survival Craft I’m really enjoying the game. It offers a subtly different experience than the mobile version of Minecraft as it really is more about survival than mining. Yet for a game that is so much about survival, once you have built a decent shelter and gathered enough supplies (something that can be done in a couple of hours) there isn’t much left to worry about and outside the Creative mode you are left with nothing to do bar explore.

And there is the problem. Exploring is both hard and dangerous.

Hard because the sheer size of the world means it’s far too easy to get lost thereby potentially reducing your attempts to consolidate a stronghold from which to weather your enforced isolation pointless because you could all too easily lose the lot and have to start again. There is only so many times building a mud hut and slowly upgrading it can be fun, let me tell you. On top of that, once you do decide to explore and are lucky enough to find a mineral-rich cave system, do you know how ball-achingly maddening it is to then lose it again just because you can’t recall if it was left at the tall tree and right after the double hill out the other way around? This alone is enough to make me falter before I leave my lovely, comfortable house and head off blindly into the hills and that is not a great play experience.

Dangerous because the penalty for dying is too great. When I rage quit a couple of days ago it was because I was killed by wolves near my house and by the time I returned to the scene all my stuff, including a diamond bloody compass and a crapton of precious wood, had vanished. Why? Am I led to understand a wolf ate it all? Why did that stuff need to vanish? I’m the only person on the bloody island so I doubt it was stolen! This more than anything else puts me of exploring and again doesn’t give a great play experience.

Now don’t misunderstand me, I really, really like this game. Other than Minecraft Pocket Edition, it’s the only game I actually play on my tablet. Also you have to remember that the game hasn’t reached beta yet and is still in alpha so there is a hell of a lot of development still to go into it (not that you’d know it – I’ve seen major studio betas that aren’t as well developed & supported). Honestly I have no hesitation in recommending you download this game immediately because it’s not just another cheap MC rip-off but a riff on that excellent idea (in itself inspired by other titles).

But having said that, and given the fact the game is in alpha, here’s what I’d like to see changed or added to make my time playing even more fun…

1) A map and waypoint system. I wouldn’t want to see these given to the player from the start, but they should be crafting options. The map should come from growing and processing a certain type of plant. Waypoints should come from crafting radio transmitters that you drop in key locations. The two would interact meaning one without the other would be useless and neither would unbalance the game but together meaningful exploration would be possible.

2) Items lost at the point of death should not de-rez. Period. Aside from being more logical (wolves and bears do not eat stacks of wood, iron or stone, let alone diamonds!) it would add a much needed exciting mechanic to the game whereby the player has to struggle and fight to get their stuff back

3) There really needs to be an end game. Currently there is no purpose to the game and beyond building a house and digging a mine, no progression towards something such as escape or revenge. I’d love to see a goal, or a series of goals, that I had to work towards as this would give me more reason to explore the island and expand my operations. Maybe certain goals can only be completed in certain areas meaning players have to set up more than one base, more than one farm or mine.

In conclusion, as my old English teacher said I should never end an essay, this is a really good game but with these additions & changes I know it will have something of the huge replayability factor Minecraft has. Now go and download it, Kaalus has a FREE demo version as well add a dirt cheap full version you know ๐Ÿ™‚

  1. I suspect I am just being newbish here, but I can’t figure out what Survivalcraft IS. Is it a MC mod? Is it a brand-new codebase with a similar look-and-feed? What platforms does it run on? Its website, including the FAQ, assume that you already know all of this stuff, and just gives like jargon-filled lists of what was changed in version…

    1. Hi mate, it’s a mobile-only MC-like game for Android, Win8 & iOS. It looks like MC but is a standalone product rather than a mod for MCPE. Depending on your platform, you can find the latest version in the app store for ยฃ3 ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. I gotta say I totally understand your frustration. I keep aski myself what to do now? And as far as losing your rich caves I personally make a bonfire type thing around my dug caves. I took a few torches and dropped them in a line back to my house. Where the cave is I put a bunch of torches up and around it to easily find it. Cool thing is that the torches never run out. Or at least I don’t think they do. But yep. ๐Ÿ™‚ hope all these things do happen for the game

      The game really, really needs more to do. I know Kaaalus is working towards making it more survivally, but it needs to have more replayability too. I still think a set of goals working towards an escape is the way to go, with far flung resources being the key, but hey ho, who am I? ๐Ÿ˜€

  3. I completely agree with you on all your points. SO frustrating that your things disappear — even though they do last a lot longer now. I decided to play a now island and my goal is to count out something like 60-100 big paces along the water and plant a number sign. Every once in a while I build a shelter and do some hunting or mining. I’m up to number 80 and STILL the sun is rising on my right side. Holy crap how the heck big are these islands? A map would be amazing. If I ever reach my #1, I’m going to pass out with mad excitement. And multiplayer would be great. I so enjoy building fun houses and fighting zombies with my son in Minecraft PE (I don’t play on the PC, only on the ipad).

Hi Cheryl and my apologies for the delay in this reply but a big family wedding kept me away ๐Ÿ˜€ You know, I’ve not played either SC or MCPE for ages now (SC since 1.21 came out and MCPE not long after 0.6.0) but I’ve just started getting back into MCPE as my son has picked it up again and love to play multiplayer. In fact, even though SC is still far and away more advanced than MCPE, the later still has that one killer feature that means I’ll end up playing it more than SC – I can drop into my son’s world easily any time I want. Until Kaalus adds at least the ability for us to do that via Wi-Fi as MCPE does now then MCPE will always be the ‘go to’ game in the Burro household. And given how quickly Mojang are now catching up to the impressive lead Kaalus has set, MCPE is set to get even better this year – I’m looking forward to larger landmass, power, railcarts and villages myself and my lad already has plans for a huge city one the villagers are in ๐Ÿ˜€

  4. I want to add oxen, mules, covered wagons, megadolan sharks time portals, dinosaur realm,NPCs, fishing, cat and dog breeds, cruise ships, quests(example: Fire Island), space shuttles, donkeys, PJs, knight armor, gold, and lambs and sheep.

    1. Wow… That’s quite a mixed list. I can see how many of those would be fun, but would they work together?

      Out of your list I’d like to see fishing, animal taming & breeding, NPCs and some sort of land & sea “monsters” that would make some explorations very dangerous indeed – I’ve mentioned in the past how a burrowing creature would make mining more dangerous and even cause cave-ins.

    1. I’ve found neither game lags on my 1st gen Nexus 7 unless I’ve used up all my free space. I read that the N7 goes all funky when you have less than 3Gb free space and I have to say that I’ve found exactly that. I freed up space and everything was fine again.

    2. The thing I hate is that he’s taking up even more space with things that ARENT multiplayer, password gates, dogs, and villagers.

  5. Well I for one am completely stressed with this game. Yes I know its about survival but its too much when you spend all your time hunting ducks and being eaten by lions. If only the dead lions/wolves/bears left food I’d be fine, after all if its about surviving you’d eat anything you’ve killed.

    1. Totally agree – I stopped playing it a long time ago and I now MCPE 0.9.0 is about to roll out I can’t see SC being anything other than a “could have been”, which is a real shame.
