I got right excited this morning when I saw the wonderful new pics on Osprey’s blog with a link to download the new Windlight version of the SL viewer. As this sits on your computer as a separate viewer ( rather than overriding your current one as an update would do meaning you can run either), so I thought “Hey! Why not? It may be slower on my old lappy, but I can use it for great pics and then go back to the normal one for everything else! I’m a man with a plan! Hoohah! Go me!”
After I’d calmed down a bit (I blame the lack of tea in my body, a status that is not good for me in a morning) I downloaded the new viewer and bated my breath in readiness.
I waited…
I installed…
I girded my loins…
I ran it…
I goaded my lions…
I prepared to have my eyeballs stripped away in a seething torrent of photo-realistic loveliness…
I…
I…
I… went “huh?” at the crappy sky above my island. I followed that with a deflated “awww!” as I realised most of the new graphics settings were unavailable to me. I heaved a despondent sigh as I logged out and wondered if I could afford a desktop with a ninja-beast of a graphics card in.
What a let down. The sunlight looks nice, but the sky doesn’t look like the pictures Osprey and Torley show. I get no reflections and water is like mud when I’m in it. I read that everything should be speeded up, but my system dropped to the sorts of speeds you get in a welcome area like Ahern even though I was the only person in the sim.
I guess I’ll not be using it on my lappy then. And if the option isn’t there to ‘turn it off’ then I’ll not be able to use SL anymore when they make it part of the main viewer.
