Infohubs: Iris Moth Temple

A long while ago I won first prize in one of Osprey’s photo contests (Hi Os – I *will* start taking shots again, I promise :-D ) and donated the money to someone called Random Unsung of the SL Public Land Preserve (1). I had the joined the group not really knowing much about them and as it is not an active group I’d all but forgotten about them. Now I think that at the time of this win, the owner of the group had sent out a group notice or IM asking for donations towards tier (2) so I sent my winnings to him (3). On the way out of the gallery Janey & I ran into the mercurial Hank Ramos who did his usual, wonderful thing of running around dropping money and being quite charming. I picked up the loot and thanked him, explaining I would donate this to the SLPLP cause too, which led Hank to throw even more money to us. Janey was a brick and donated her booty and winnings to the same cause so between us we sent a couple of grand or more into the fray.

Fast forward a few months and I’m reading the blog of someone called Prokofy Neva. I can’t remember if it was on his blog or in his profile, but I saw a mention of Random Unsung and it turns out they are one and the same. It turns out that Prok likes to keep places in SL open for all too – and people say he has no nice side, tsk! (5)

Jump ahead to now (well, a week or two ago) and Prok’s blog had a long post all about his work to renovate the land around the ancient Moth Temple in Iris which is, and here is the last linking pin, held in the SL Public Land Preserve! See, it was a long journey but we got here in the end. Sit down, kick off your shoes and have a slice of cake – you did well. Let the next part of this post wash over you. Fancy a back rub?

He and Jessica Ornitz have been hard at work for a loooooong time to make this historic landmark and infohub something people will remember and find useful. To read more of Prok’s designs and places, as well of the concept of a Memory Bazaar, check out his post here. Meanwhile, as I’m much shallower than Prok, I am content to simply visit, photograph and tell you about what a great build it is – Read on McDuff…

A TP there lands you on a small jetty, part of a network that criss-crosses the sim:

By the TP point you can pick up a great, free set of moth wings (made by Os the Ace):

They are perfect for flying up and flitting about the wonderful temple:

Back on the jetty system, and with my newly acquired wings neatly tucked away, beautiful lamps and jars of fireflies light the way:

Along the jetties small wooden huts are open to all and sundry, part of Prok’s planned Memory Bazaar I think. Each one will help noobs orientate themselves and each one has been lovingly created by Jessica…

The noodle bar – yum yum!:

The tattoo parlour (and after a few beers in the nearby bar, I now sport a rather natty tat on my bum. Does anyone know who Ryan is?):

(1) I’ve always been keen on green spaces and public land in SL – see my posts on the SLPRS / VPRS for more info.

(2) I’m a dope at these things. I know tier is rent so just asking for L$ makes sense, but some folks as for a different type of tier that I think is a temporary signing over of land. I think. I don’t know. Anyhoo, this wasn’t that type of ask, Random wanted money.

(3) For which I never got a thank you and I cried for a week. I’m delicate like that. Actually, I just thought I’d been scammed, but I hadn’t – go back up there and read on to find out why. Who was this mysterious Random chap? Did he contact me again? Have I ever seen Hank since? All these questions and less may or may not be answered (4).

(4) Prok. No. No. Thereyago!

(5) He just hides it well ;-)

  1. I remember that day well when the avatar was giving money away, I thought then what a lovely generous thing to do!! Your photos are wonderful and it looks like a really interesting place to visit.

  2. Cheers mate – you must go, it’s an interesting place (you know me and these old locations :-D )

  3. Amazing pics! I can’t wait to go over and check the improvements out. As for Prok, I’ve heard negative things but if he’s into preservation/improvement such as this he’ll always have the benefit of the doubt from me.

  4. I made 2 moth avatars so the moth group Cecropia (started by Prokofy) members could fly around and lay dwell eggs. We had lots of fun doing that.

The avatars have feelers, wings, and the body, and look very amusing when worn, especially in a swarm.

  5. Hi Baker – Prok’s ok, he just not afraid of upsetting the apple cart (or the driver, or passers by) by pointing out unpopular aspects of the world and how it is run. I wouldn’t like to argue with him though.

Hi Os – I would love to have seen that :-D I shrunk the body parts as they didn’t fit my body correctly and I needed to take pics quickly. I have to say, I kind of like the gazelle moth (oo, that sounds like a WW1 plane!) look.

  7. Back in January of 2006, the officers of the Phyneas Jack Memorial Trust sent out a plea for help with tier during a tier gap.

I was horrible at keeping records at the time (still am) but I distinctly remember Random Unsung donating tier to help cover the five day period. We were able to cover that incident without having to incur a double billing, with the help of everyone who stepped up to the plate. It was a great example of folks pulling together..

  8. Hi Sal,

This tier request – was it for money? Or is there someway of sharing out tier to others?

  9. There certainly is a way to share one’s tier without exchanging Lindens. Tier is a form of currency which can be purchased directly from Linden Lab for a monthly fee to facilitate the acquisition of land on the Mainland (you don’t need to purchase tier from the Lab to rent land or to purchase/rent land on a private island). One has to have, at the very least, a premium account to share tier. Premium accounts come with 512 sq. m. of tier available to the account holder to use for a plot of land or to donate to a group. If one’s tier is donated to a group, that tier can be applied to the tier needed to hold group own land. The Forest of Kahruvel is completely group-owned and comprises 237,379 sq. m. of land throughout the regions just be low Immaculate. Of that, approx. 10,248 sq. m. has been donated by Phyneas Jack Memorial Trust group members. To donate one has to choose Edit->Groups…, select the group to donate tier to, click the Info button, click the Land & L$ tab, enter an amount in the Your Contribution field and click the Apply button. The contributed tier will be applied to the group’s available tier with an additional 10% as a benefit from the Lab. So tier goes further when it is contributed to a group. Tier can be donated in this way or revoked at any time, it is always under the control of the one who contributes it. You can’t lose it unless you stop paying the Lab for it. The Forest of Kahruvel currently uses a little over 3.62 regions which amounts to about US$706.31/mo. This, my friend, is one of the reasons the Trust is revamping the Kahruvel web site and getting the Forest of Kahruvel and Cowell Village (and Phobos region) ready so more residents can live there and help offset the costs to maintan those areas. It has always been our goal to make them as self-sustainable as possible, we just have not been in a hurry to do it and want to make sure it is done in the best way possible. Much of the forest area was acquired before there were even customizable group tools to as there are today. The ability to set up different roles and abilities in a group has made it possible to create a rich and varied foundation and operation for a group-owned area.

  10. Ha! I didn’t even answer your first question. No, the tier request we made was not for money. It was for interested parties to donate their available land tier to the Trust for five days until our tier gap was past. Most everyone removed their donated tier after that, though a few kind souls have left theirs in. You can see who has contributed, and how much, by examining the group info for the Phyneas Jack Memorial Trust and selecting the Members & Roles tab.

  11. Oh.. ever the politician! Not that those who removed their tier were not kind.. on the contrary! It was a total blessing that they helped out so selflessly. But we were surprised that some (I think forgot.. shhh) left theirs in after the urgent need was satisfied.

  12. LOL – thanks for that (those) answer(s) Sal – I understand completely now something that has confuserated me since I started in 06.

I know I’ve told you before that I’ll be first in line to live in Cowell, but let me say it again – and I’ll even look at going Premium to donate tier..

It’s about time this wandering Burro set down some roots and got involved in a community :)
